Emoji Rating : Uber may start letting riders rate their drivers by using emoji

According to Quartz, Uber is currently testing the new emoji-based system in a couple of markets, although an Uber spokesperson either could not or would not list which ones.

The rating system was reportedly proposed by Uber’s San Francisco headquarters but, so far, no riders in that city have reported being asked to rate their driver with a smiley face. Surprised users in Singapore and Austin, Texas, though, have tweeted screenshots of their post-ride emoji choices.​

Uber currently requires its drivers to maintain a rating of at least 4.6 out of 5 stars, or it can boot them from the platform.

There are no such standards for riders and, although the company hasdenied blacklisting passengers, users whose previous drivers have consistently given them low ratings might find that they have a difficult time getting a ride.

It will be interesting to see how Uber quantifies those smiley faces or averages the thumbs up and thumbs down ratings, for both parties. Of course, Quartz says, that might be the point:

“Drivers argue these [rating] restrictions show that Uber controls their work environment, and they should therefore be given full benefits as employees, although they are treated as independent contractors […] Reducing Uber’s rating system to “good/bad” could potentially weaken the argument that Uber is acting as an employer, if it indeed minimizes undue firings.”

Uber Chases The Perfect Ride for its customers and drivers both, Uber keeps experimenting with various methods, the first thing was using Google map, then user tracking, driver tracking, ETA, using google map to navigate to customer and destination, now there is one more addition in form of SPOT technology.

Outside big events like concerts, tons of Ubers can be waiting, making it tough for passengers to figure out which car is theirs. Uber knows riders and drivers sometimes have difficulty finding each other, especially when it’s crowded or dark outside. So starting today, we’re testing a new solution in Seattle. The technology, called SPOT, allows riders and drivers to connect through the use of color.

HOW IT WORKS

Uber’ve provided some of their local driver partners with SPOT devices that are attached to their car windshields. When a rider requests a trip and is matched with a SPOT-enabled driver, the rider will be asked to select a color in the app while waiting. The rider can even light up their phone screen by pressing and holding on the color to help the driver quickly identify them. When the driver arrives, the SPOT device on his or her windshield will glow in the rider’s chosen color.

This way, passengers won’t accidentally open the door of the wrong Uber, or even a non-Uber civilian’s car, which I can attest is quite awkward. Previously, passengers had to rely on Uber’s sometimes-laggy map, generic car types, and hard-to-read license plates.

The feature goes into testing in Seattle, and if it’s popular and helps Uber, it could be rolled out to more markets.

The big problem here is that Uber has failed to get drivers to uniformly adopt any additional technology beyond their self-provided car. They do have the Uber windshield sticker. But many drivers don’t even carry charging cords for iPhones and Androids, and few have got the auxiliary cord to run Uber’s Spotify integration. It would be tough, and potentially somewhat expensive, for Uber to distribute the SPOT devices and train drivers to consistently use them.

Uber is trying to be the biggest company of world.Its already biggest startup and they raised $2 Billion in latest funding round from Tiger Global Management participated in the newest round, led by its partner Lee Fixel, as did T. Rowe Price, said the people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the terms are still private.

Uber hired Google Map exec to develop and manage its own map. The participation of Tiger Global, however, is particularly interesting. Tiger Global is an investor in Ola and GrabTaxi, two of Uber’s largest competitors in India and Southeast Asia. It is perhaps the first time a major institutional investor participated in the rounds of both Uber and its major competitors. And on Thursday, Ola and GrabTaxi announced a strategic partnership with Lyft, which is also based in San Francisco and is Uber’s major competitor in the United States.

Update: Uber official statement and how to use is here.  This new payment system will enable 600 million indian to use uber wihtout any online payment system. Its Cash as simple as you take auto or bus.

How to use Cash payment system...

1. Open up the app and go to the Payment section on the top left corner
2. Select ‘CASH’ as your payment option
3. Request for a ride
4. Before you get out, pay the amount shown directly to the driver – No haggling required!

PRO TIPS

• Cash option is only available for trips in Hyderabad
• A valid Uber account is needed to be able to book a ride and pay in cash
• Not everyone will see the cash option right away as we are testing and rolling it out slowly
• You do not need any minimum balance in your Paytm wallet to be able to book rides with cash as your payment option BUT make sure you have enough cash for the trip
• You will not be able to make part payments on cash trips with your Paytm wallet and vice versa
• Fare adjustments are not possible for cash rides
• There is no booking fee or additional charge to riders

New user sign up for 1 free ride worth Rs 300/-

The pilot started in May was successful in Hyderabad and Nairobi in Africa. This opens up more business opportunity for the company in Indian cities where cash payment is more often a dominant and trusted option for riders.

"We know that cash is still the dominant payment option for millions of Indians, especially in smaller cities. At Uber, our goal is to ensure everyone can enjoy the hassle-free convenience of ordering a safe, reliable ride at the push of a button. By giving riders cash payments as an option, we are able to better meet the needs of a rapidly growing and fast-evolving consumer base," Bhavik Rathod, general manager, Uber Bengaluru said.

However, the option may not be available in your city right away. Uber informed that the process will roll out in a few weeks. "Not all riders will see cash right away as we are testing different groups and user preferences," he added.
